Main Light East recently supported two Opera Philadelphia productions, providing lighting and atmospheric gear for Sleepers Awake and The Black Clown. The projects gave Main Light the opportunity to support two distinct creative teams with flexible rental packages built around theatrical precision, bold color, and reliable production-ready fixtures. Sleepers Awake was presented as a world premiere by composer Gregory Spears, while The Black Clown brought a Philadelphia premiere of the Langston Hughes-inspired work to the Miller Theater.

For Sleepers Awake, Main Light supplied a lighting package that included Robe iForte, Ayrton Diablo, Chroma-Q Color Force II, Astera Titan Tubes, and Astera QuikSpots. The production lighting design was led by Drew Billiau, a Philadelphia-area lighting designer whose work includes Opera Philadelphia, BalletX, Pennsylvania Ballet, The Wilma Theater, The Arden Theatre, and other theatre, opera, and dance companies.

Main Light East also supported The Black Clown at the Miller Theater with a package that included Ayrton Diablo, Elation Fuze Max Profile, Martin Aura PXL, ETC Source Four Lustr2, ETC ColorSource PAR V Zoom, Astera Titan Tubes, and Look Solutions Unique 2.1 Hazers. The fixture mix helped support the production’s theatrical lighting needs, from key light and color to atmosphere and visual impact. For design, John Torres was the Lighting Designer and Christopher Gilmore was the Associate Lighting Designer for the production.

Sleepers Awake Lighting Designer Drew Billiau commented on the support: “The designs for The Sleepers and Black Clown were very different and complicated. For Sleepers the design was based upon the Astera Titan tubes as verticals for the railings of the curved platforms. Travis and the team pulled together a package of movers and tubes along with the wiring harness to install it all seamlessly. For Black Clown the designers had specific 5k Skypans that Mainlight was able to source for us as well as the full package prepped that allowed us to work in a very tight 1-day load in schedule. We could not have done these shows without the support of our partners at Main light and our rep Travis.”
