Main Light, LLC, a preeminent lighting rental partner, has expanded its support for its clients by opening a new facility in Teterboro, NJ, just outside New York City. 

With the opening of the Teterboro shop on Monday, February 20, there are now four optimally situated Main Light locations: Wilmington, DE; Teterboro, NJ; Nashville, TN; and Las Vegas, NV.

“The Main Light ethos of being fully responsive to our customers is reflected in our opening this facility; it came about from listening to our clients,” states Main Light CEO Randy Mullican. “We have supported our existing clients in the NYC and Tri-State areas for years from Wilmington, but we firmly believe that this will make working with Main Light just that much more efficient and cost-effective. This new shop is two hours closer to our Northeast clients, and considering the cost of fuel and trucking, it makes a lot of economic sense for us and our clients to be right in the region. Especially as we have seen demand continually grow for our dry hire service, the Teterboro shop provides easy access to our equipment and allows us to quickly address customers last-minute needs, which we all known always happens in this business. We are excited to now be open in Teterboro and look forward to building stronger relationships with production partners in the area.”

These new units are being deployed to all four Main Light’s locations – Wilmington, DE; Teterboro, NJ; Nashville, TN; and Las Vegas, NV.

“Our clients are looking for more IP65 rated options to provide a weatherproof lighting solution to their outdoor venues,” says Main Light CEO Randy Mullican, “which reduces their labor costs and saves time not having to add weatherproofing to outdoor rigs. It’s also nice that the iForte doesn’t need an external pressure check on the fixture. That’s a big time savings when it comes to fixture maintenance. Industry demand for IP65 rated products is high, consequential enough that Main Light’s National Rental Manager Rick McKinney noted that it as one of the driving factors in Main Light’s decision to add the iForte to the company’s dry hire inventory. “The demand is across the industry, not just regionally so we have not hesitated to take delivery of a substantial inventory of the IP65 rated iForte fixtures across all of our locations. Main Light Expands Inventory With ROBE IFORTE IP65 Rated Luminaires

Main Light, a preeminent dry hire company, has hired Denis O’Brien as an Account Executive who will work from Main Light West in Las Vegas, NV.

Main Light’s business model as the leading industry source for dry hire equipment appeals to O’Brien, as he explains. “Dry hire is a really great model; it lets us help everyone. We get to work with other companies to provide the gear and solutions they need to support their clients. I like the idea of being able to do that at Main Light.” O’Brien previously worked as an Account Executive with 4Wall in Las Vegas; where during his over 17 years there, he also held the position of Vice President of Business Development. He says, “I’m looking forward to the change of gears in coming to Main Light. I know about 75% of the staff at Main Light, and they’re fantastic. Also, as a company it is very organized and the equipment is well-maintained and new, which will make my job that much easier. I am really looking forward to being part of the Main Light team.”

For O’Brien, he likes the fact that no two days are ever alike, “Whenever you go to work, you know it’s not going to be 

-style job where everything is repeated. Every day there’s a new challenge that you have to fix. It’s not really work for me; I enjoy helping people with lighting. I’ve been around it for so long that I know the answers, or know how to get the answers, and can help people out. They might feel like they’re doomed, but I know that we can figure it out and get them the solutions they need. That is why I think Main Light is a good fit for me, because they are all about getting clients what they need as well.”

Denis O’Brien Joins Main Light West as Account Executive

Main Light increased its rental inventory of Ayrton lighting fixtures with the purchase of a large complement of versatile new Zonda 9 FX fixtures. 

The company currently has offices in Delaware, Tennessee, and Las Vegas, with a fourth location coming February 2023 to Teterboro, NJ. Main Light has seen a steady demand for its Ayrton Perseo, Khamsin and Diablo fixtures, which were acquired during the past two years. ACT Entertainment is the exclusive distributor of Ayrton lighting in North America.

Main Light’s acquisition of Zonda 9 FX represents one of the first investments by a US company in the luminaire. Designed for a multitude of applications, Zonda 9 FX is the first in a new family of products for stage lighting equipped with a high-performance 40 W LED source with RGB+W additive color synthesis. Zonda’s LED/optical system combination can produce a powerful light output of 25,000 lumens and a homogeneous mixture of pastel and saturated colors. It serves as a powerful wash light while delivering 3D volumetric effects via individual control of each LED. Its high-definition LiquidEffect creates complex 2D and 3D graphical effects, which can be coupled with beam, wash or matrix applications.

“We were eager to add to our mix of Ayrton products based on the reliability of the fixtures we have and the support that ACT offers,” says Randy Mullican, CEO of Main Light. “We saw Zonda at Prolight + Sound, and it filled a gap for us in large-format LED wash fixtures, which also offer tremendous pixel control and new and exciting effects. Zonda promises to be a great wash with the added bonus of effects.”

Mullican expects Zonda 9 FX to attract lighting designers looking for “a bright wash with special effects capabilities for entertainment and large conferences.” No sooner were the new fixtures delivered than they were dispatched to the Formula One US Grand Prix’s annual race at Austin’s Circuit of the Americas where Ed Sheeran performed his first US show in four years.

“We’re thrilled that Main Light continues to invest in Ayrton and the other technologies ACT Entertainment represents, and furthermore we’re certain that both the reliability and popularity of the Zonda 9 FX will serve Main Light well. Mullican reports that Main Light intends to buy more Zonda 9 FX fixtures, and he can count on ACT “to always provide a great level of support for our purchases. ACT already provided technical support on the effects side of Zonda 9 FX, including training our staff so we’ll have a knowledge base of the fixture’s effects tools to share with customers.”

Main Light Becomes One Of First In U.S. To Acquire Ayrton Zonda 9 FX Fixtures

Main Light, LLC, a preeminent dry hire rental partner, has added the new S-Tribe™ linear scenic luminaire from Portman Lights to its inventory in all four Main Light locations across the U.S. 

Long a proponent of the European-based Portman Lights innovative luminaires, the acquisition continues adding to the manufacturer’s range of luminaires available at Main Light. The S-Tribe is a linear strip that combines tungsten-emulating LED sources with RGB LED strips. With a completely new, unique design, it is an excellent consideration when looking to create scenic structures with linear luminaires.

“We have had a lot of success renting the range of Portman Lights’ products and when we saw the S-Tribe being demonstrated, we anticipated that our production house and rental clients will get a lot of designer requests for this luminaire,” says Randy Mullican, CEO Main Light, LLC. “It’s a very unique linear light and one that can build lit scenery very quickly. It really allows the easy blending of lighting and scenic elements. These units will definitely give designers something creatively different and versatile to make their designs stand out, in a good way.”

The S-Tribe linear luminaire includes five bright warm white LED segments that dim smoothly, as well as provide a great tungsten emulation so they do warm up when dimmed down and are blindingly bright at maximum output. These warm white strips are paired with 10 RGBW LED strips that can provide saturated colors, allow for color mixing, and dim just as smoothly as the white sections. They also have the ability to be separately controllable. In terms of optics, the S-Tribe includes a highly reflective, hammered reflector and an opal diffuser. Built with high-quality electronics, the S-Tribe has six different DMX modes, DMX-In and DMX-Out, Art-Net, RDM feedback, and an optional W-DMX wireless DMX control is available. It has a Colour Feedback System™, macros, and powerCON TRUE1 power-through available. The user interface for control is via a high-contrast LCD display with highlighted buttons.

A unique stand-out feature is the Portman’s Auto Orientation™. Designed to work like a smart phone that changes the screen ratio when it is rotated, the S-Tribe will automatically change the order of channels from top to bottom and left to right. Since the S-Tribe can be mounted in any orientation, users can change the channel order automatically—without manual mapping. Auto Orientation automatically detects the position of the luminaire and enables defining the order of channels (up-down and left-right) when creating a row out of S-Tribes. This user-friendly feature is especially helpful when creating larger structures. Users can also turn this feature off or define where the top is.

Main Light, LLC has appointed Silas Flores as Operations Manager for Main Light, East in Wilmington, DE. 

Flores will be focused on ensuring that Main Light’s original facility continues to provide the company’s renowned dry hire services to professional production and rental companies. Bringing over 20+ years of experience working in the entertainment industry, his extensive experience gives him a strong understanding of the needs and expectations of Main Light’s clients.

“I’ve done a lot of everything,” laughs Flores. “I started doing stage work while I was in high school, and I never looked back. Right out of school I worked in a warehouse for a few months and then went straight out on tour.” He spent a number of years on the road as a crew chief for lighting, doing motion control and even some rigging. “After a few years of touring, I realized that I preferred building the shows; putting systems together along with managing people and training them to put together the package better and more consistently.” Flores has worked with production companies overseeing staff, inventory, and purchasing. He was in management positions, working as operations, asset, and logistics management with Control Freak Systems for over five years as well as holding department manager/technical director roles with a range of companies including Delicate Productions, Epic Production Technologies, and Ed & Ted’s Excellent Lighting Inc. for several years.

Main Light Appoints Silas Flores To Be Operations Manager For Main Light, East

With Christmas just around the corner, and Easter really not that long after, plans for special productions and presentations are in full swing. 

A big part of planning is theatrical lighting, and for many houses of worship determining where to sink limited budgets for new gear can be fraught – which makes it the perfect time to look at different solutions, like renting.

For this roundtable, we invited Jim Ripp, the Manager of Technical Training, Sales Development and Rentals for Full Compass Systems, Randy Mullican, the CEO of Main Light and Robby Kurtz, the VP of Business Development of 4Wall Entertainment, to discuss why renting is a potentially viable option.

TFWM: Tell us a little bit about your company.

: Main Light was founded in 1981 and has established itself as a preeminent lighting rental dry-hire partner within the United States. We offer reliable, well-maintained equipment from the leading live entertainment manufacturers to clients across the United States. Our extensive inventory is continually being balanced to ensure it meets the demand of our clients.

Do you do a lot of rentals to houses of worship?

: Yes, our Rentals department is very experienced in working with Houses of Worship with their gear needs and anticipating what their equipment needs may be, including wireless systems, streaming gear, projectors, and portable battery-operated PA’s. Houses of Worship can feel confident that we can answer their questions.

: 4Wall rents a lot of equipment to houses of worship. We could be providing anything from a low fog machine for Christmas, to a 53’ semi worth of lighting and video gear for a large holiday production or conference. Churches call 4Wall for many reasons, but there are a few that really stand out. They call us because of our equipment variety, quality, and dependability. All our equipment goes through a thorough quality control process every time it comes back to the shop. If it doesn’t work, it doesn’t go out. Additionally, all our inventory is practically brand new. 4Wall is also UsedLighting.com, where we sell and rotate our equipment every 2-3 years. It allows us to provide reliable & state-of-the-art equipment that our customers can count on to perform as they expect it to.

: We have a long-standing relationship with the House of Worship market served out of our East Coast location in Wilmington, DE.
We recently opened a new location in Nashville, TN to more effective serve our customers in the south. We also hired a dedicated National House of Worship Account Manager to better attend to our clients within the house of worship market.


What makes rental a viable option for houses of worship?

: Lighting and Video rentals for houses of worship are a great way to add a creative visual impact to the church equipment that is already in place. It also gives the techs a chance to try out some new gear in their space before they make a purchase commitment that is permanent. When I worked at a church, I loved designing for our conferences or productions because it allowed me to spread my creative “wings” now and then. With rentals, I was able to grow in my craft, and stay up to date with how the technology was progressing.

: To put it simply, these lights are not cheap. We have built an extensive inventory of all the newest technologies within the space of entertainment lighting. We aim to be a rental partner churches can trust to provide high quality lighting rentals at an exceptional value.

: Rental allows houses of worship to expand and upgrade their production possibilities for specialized events. And rentals allow for experimentation with a product before making a purchase.


What are the most important questions a house of worship should ask before signing a rental agreement?

: What is the average age of the equipment? Does the contract have all the items I will need for using the fixtures? We go to great length to ensure there is a clear line of communication open between us and our rental partners.

: What are the cancellation policies?, What are the policies, and late fees if gear is not returned on time?, What financial responsibility do I have if the gear gets damaged or destroyed?, Will the rental staff offer some guidance or basic training on the gear if needed?, How well is the gear maintained in between rentals?

: I would say it is important to know what is being provided and what you are paying for. It’s always important to read the fine print. Does this include sales tax, and will sales tax be added in my state if we are not tax-exempt? Are there any costs that will be added above this rental price as quoted? I also think it is important to confirm there will be spare lighting fixtures/video tiles, etc. Even if all the gear arrives in perfect condition, things could happen, like a volunteer dropping a moving light, or some other type of mistake. We always create our rental quotes with roughly 10% spares over the quantity requested. In most cases, they will not be cracked open, but it is always nice to know you have them in your back pocket.

What should a house of worship be looking for in a rental partner?

Rentals and purchasing can both be stressful, as Houses of Worship want to make sure they are spending their money wisely. So, look for a company that will take the time to get to know you and understand your audio/video/lighting needs.

: I believe the house of worship should look for a high level of integrity and quality in the rental company they choose. Churches are responsible to steward their member’s charitable giving with Godly character and integrity. In the same way, I think it is important that they choose a company that aligns with the desire to function with a high level of integrity in business and with their customers. That’s why I think that 4Wall is such a great partner for churches and one of the main reasons I chose to work here. If we promise we are going to provide something to the customer, we will do everything in our power to make sure that happens. When customers rent equipment from us, we can promise it will work as expected.

: A company who recognizes churches stand apart from the other clients within the rental lighting space. A house of worship does not have the same needs as a theater, touring, or production company. Every client base has individual requirements that are unique to their space. This is something we fully recognize. We went through painstaking lengths to ensure we had the support in place to offer a dedicated service specifically for houses of worship.

Does your company offer training on rental equipment?

: 4Wall does offer training on our rental equipment. We have set up demos for customers many times in our shops so that they can see the equipment, understand how it works, and confirm it will work for their intended purpose. There are times we host console, media server, and other training in our warehouse as well. If a house of worship would feel more comfortable having one of our folks on site, we have 4Wall show staff for this very purpose. We can provide services from prepping and setting up the equipment, to operating the show for the customer, if needed. We can also provide drafting & pre-vis services if they require a deeper level of involvement from 4Wall.

: We take great pride in our client support. We are strictly a “dry hire” rental company, meaning we do not install or operate any rental equipment on site. However, to help fill any knowledge gap; we are growing an extensive library of training material (in written and video format) that will be free to clients. Our dedicated representative(s) are also very skilled at consulting on what lighting equipment may best be suited for a specific venue.

: Yes, we always work with our customers to give them the knowledge they need so that they can operate any piece of gear with confidence. We work to always go beyond the equipment, to also deliver a level of ease and expertise.

Is it sometimes better for a house of worship to rent versus owning the equipment outright? Can you offer some examples?

: Special events may require specific gear or an expanded production plan. For example, a larger event may call for more channels of wireless than used in the weekly services. Houses of worship can save a lot of money by renting for such limited events as opposed to making a larger investment. Whenever you want to make an event bigger and better without a large investment, consider renting instead.

: There are a lot of variables at play when it comes to weighing the options of buying vs renting. The quantity of fixtures needed, the length of time they will be used, and the type of fixtures necessary to fill a role will all play a role in a renting or buying decision. That being said, we also have an extensive inventory of used equipment for these very scenarios. Whether a house of worship is renting, or buying, we can be their partner in finding a solution.

: I believe there are many times it is better for a church to rent instead of owning outright. When churches have special events, the quantity and type of equipment they rent will be different every time. Every year they may be going for a new Christmas look, or a new conference look, so renting gives them the ability to design a fresh integrity and stage set every time. That also could be said for churches that change their “look” with every sermon series. We have customers that have long-term rental agreements with us so that they can change out their set every quarter, or twice a year. One other major benefit is that if a piece of equipment fails on the long-term rental, we will replace it for them. If they owned the item, they would probably need to ship it off for repair, and they would be down that unit for months quite possibly. With the churches that have long-term rentals with us, we also can work in service plans. If the church knows the gear will be hanging for, say, a year, we can schedule our techs to come to the church to clean and QC all the equipment on site. We know the church techs are usually spread thin trying to manage all they are responsible for, so we are motivated to do anything we can to make the rental process easy and seamless.

What are the most common pieces of equipment churches rent? What gear do you think is often overlooked by churches that they should be renting?

: Currently our most rented equipment in that market is the LightScape® Fiber Optic Curtain.

: Wireless systems, streaming gear, projectors, and portable battery-operated PAs are our most common rentals.

: I would say we most often rent moving lights, and fixed LED pars, floods, or strip lights. We also do a fair bit of LED video tile rentals and projection too. Items that I would say are overlooked or not considered by churches when working with 4Wall would be things like wireless battery-powered LEDs, rigging, media servers, and TVs. Some will ask for these types of items, but many think we may not have ALL they need and look elsewhere for this or that. I would recommend that it is always a good idea to send over the full list of what they need to each vendor, and then let the rental company say yes or no to what they can provide.

: Small LED washes are an often overlooked but extremely versatile fixture.

: Special events often call for special equipment. It’s important for houses of worship to consider renting gear when the volume of attendees and audiences may be much larger. Or when there are key elements of a performance or event that go beyond their standard planning.

With Christmas just around the corner, and Easter really not that long after, plans for special productions and presentations are in full swing. A big part of planning is theatrical lighting, and for many houses of worship determining where to sink limited budgets for new gear can be fraught – which makes it the perfect time to look at different solutions, like renting.

The DTW Blinder 350 IP™ houses two 175W warm-white and amber COB LEDs and can emulate the “Dim to Warm” look of conventional tungsten fixtures. Useful as a traditional audience blinder or warmed to enhance special moments, it features full color-temperature range control plus independent Dim-to-Warm channel control (1,800K – 3,200K). Its multi-environmental protection means it can be exposed to the elements, on the downstage edge for example, without the worry of weather and cost and inconvenience of protective coverings.
